Document proof on ayurveda: PM Narendra Modi

PANAJI: PM Narendra Modi on Sunday said that for ayurveda to get global recognition, there is a need to document the data-based evidence pertaining to it, and to verify its every claim using modern scientific parameters. He said that the reason behind the delay in global acceptance of ayurveda is that science only accepts evidence. He also said that the Union government is in the process of forming a national Ayush research consortium for conducting research.

"We have the effect and influence of Ayurveda, but we were lagging behind because of evidence. Today, there is a need to compulsorily document the data-based evidence, we have to continuously work towards achieving it. The medical data, research, and journals that we have need to be brought together to verify every claim along modern scientific parameters," Modi said.

He was speaking at the valedictory function of 9th World Ayurveda Congress at Panaji. He also virtually inaugurated three infrastructure projects worth around Rs 1,000 crore - All India Institute of Ayurveda at Dhargalim, Pernem, National Institute of Unani Medicine, Ghaziabad, and National Institute of Homeopathy, Delhi.

One of the key resolutions of the Amrit Kaal is to ensure global welfare through India's scientific knowledge and cultural experience, for which ayurveda is a strong and effective medium, he said, adding that India has assumed the G20 presidency and the theme for the same is 'One Earth, One Family, One Future'.

"More than 30 countries have given recognition to ayurveda as a traditional system of medicine. We need to work together to ensure that ayurveda get recognition in more countries," he said, adding that the three institutes will provide an impetus to the Ayush healthcare system.

He said that ayurveda goes beyond treatment and promotes wellness, and that the world is returning towards this ancient way of life.

Modi said that a lot of work with regard to ayurveda is going on in India. "Establishing the Ayush ministry led to an increase in trust and enthusiasm towards ayurveda. Today, the world is celebrating international yoga day as a global festival of health and wellness. This shows that yoga and ayurveda, which were earlier looked down upon, have become a new hope for mankind."

Modi said that an Ayush research portal has been created, which has data of nearly 40,000 research studies. He also said that during the pandemic, 150 specific research studies related to Ayush were carried out. He urged participants at the World Ayurveda Congress to come together to get recognition globally.
